Many Flathead valley residents have been concerned over the recent rash of thefts and break-ins to homes and storage units.
Storage units, homes, trailers and automobiles have been getting broken into over the past couple of years all over Northwest Montana, which authorities say much of it is related to drug crime.
At a local Kalispell lock and safe company, they say the key is to make sure you protect your storage units, trailers and homes with the right kind of locks.
At Anytime Lock and Safe, business has been booming for a while now. Locksmith Dylan Rohletter tells us that a lot of their customers have come in with stories of stolen items in the past year.
“People are breaking into storage units, they’re even cutting the doors and everything like that,” Rohletter said. “So getting some good locks to keep people out is a good thing.”
Dylan walked us around their store and pointed out a variety of locks that will keep would-be burglars at bay and out of your valuables.
“A good quality deadbolt, just getting good quality locks on your doors that nobody can just wiggle, jiggle and break off your door to get into your house, cheap padlocks,” Rohletter said. “Get the ones that have protected shackles for storage units, those are always a good thing. That way they can’t just go up with bolt cutters and go snip, at least they have to work a lot harder to get into it.”
According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, 90 percent of burglaries over the past year are likely related to the drug trade in Flathead County, including the trafficking of heroin and meth.
Curry told us recently that stolen items are being exchanged for drugs before being sold, often out of state. So before your valuables become someone else’s, you may want to better secure them.
“Storage units, houses, vehicles, they’re breaking into everything,” Rohletter said.
There’s not one specific thing. If there’s something of value in there they’re going to get in there.
The key to a good storage unit lock is choosing one that criminals have a tough time cutting open.
